Welcome to the CBME Road…

This is a blog about CBME, or competency-based medical education, a global movement to revolutionize the way we train health professionals. CBME is an approach to curriculum design, teaching, learning, and assessment that is fundamentally oriented to outcomes, or more specifically, the abilities of our graduates at each stage of their career.

CBME now involves thousands of individual teachers, leaders, and learners all over the world. We recently hosted the 2ndWorld Summit on CBME in Basel, Switzerland, with AMEE’s annual conference. Three hundred attendees from 45 countries, from the Netherlands to Vietnam, participated in the discussions. More about the history and scope of CBME innovations will follow. Given that CBME is now such a global movement, we thought it was time for a blog to help disseminate information on all aspects.

We chose “CBME Road” as a metaphor for the voyage we are all on: moving forward, always improving health professional education, dedicated to better patient care, using the guidance we can find, sometimes navigating obstacles, sometimes awed by the sights, sometimes in need of a good night’s sleep. The blog will draw heavily from the literature and from the amazing leaders in a group called the International CBME Collaborators (ICBMEC). This group, made up of leaders from all over the world, has been on the forefront of the debates, designs, scholarship, policies, and sometimes, the sharp end of the criticism.

There will be new posts every Tuesday, and our contributor pool pulls from some of the brightest minds in MedEd.  This blog is very much meant to be a conversation, and I encourage you to add your voice by sharing in the comment section.
